Old photographs are a great way to see how people lived in the past. Most Local Study Libraries hold photographic collections, however most of these are being put onto a searchable online database at http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/.  On the border of Nottinghamshire there is also the Long Eaton and Sawley Archive http://www.archive.long-eaton.com/default.asp
