Photographic

Publications by R Iliffe & W Baguley of the Nottingham Historical Film Unit: (Victorian Nottingham, vols 1-19; Edwardian Nottingham, vols 1-9

Since the 1980s there have been many books of historic photographs of the county, published by local newspapers (especially Nottm Evening Post), Alan Sutton Ltd, the European Library and Reflections of a Bygone Age {The “In Old Postcards” series}.

There is no dedicated local photographic collection relating to roads, but as with all subjects relating to the history of the county, researchers are advised to consult the picture collection held at Angel Row Library, Nottingham.

Film & video

  • Nottingham Historical Film Unit collection [???? Nottinghamshire Local Studies Library]
  • Nottingham Central Library has loan copies of various films and videos, containing incidental details of roads and road transport.

Artistic

For Nottingham, the earliest depictions of roads are found in the plates of Thoroton 1677 and Deering 1751 [Notts Library & NAO]. Prospects of the town by Kip & Knyff (1707), Samuel & Nathaniel Buck (1740s) and Thomas Sandby (1740s) are also useful [Nottm Museums]. In the late 19thC the work of T.W. Hammond provides many atmospheric (but topographically loose) views of the town [Nottm Museums & Nottinghamshire Local Studies Library].

For Nottinghamshire, there are a number of interesting collections of late 18thC and 19thC topographical artworks in museum collections:

  • For Mansfield.................???.......[collection of topograpical views in Mansfield Museum]
  • For Newark, ..................???..............[Newark Museum & Gilstrap Library].
  • For Retford, ..................???.............[Bassetlaw Museum & Library; Retford Hist Soc.]
