The construction of the southernmost 50 miles of the M1 motorway was the subject of a “radio ballad” compiled from field recordings undertaken in the late 1950s by Charles Parker and Ewan McColl. Entitled “Song of a Road” (Topic Records: TSCD 802) the ballad was broadcast in 1959.
