The British Coal Photographic Collection

The British Coal Photographic Collection has been scanned and can be viewed at The Coal Authority's Mining Heritage Centre: the originals are kept at the National Archives, Kew. There are over 7,500 of Nottinghamshire.

The National Coal Mining Museum

The National Coal Mining Museum has a collection of photographs (including NCB-commissioned photographs of mines and mining communities taken by Harold White between 1950 and 1960) which can be viewed by appointment.

Bilsthorpe Heritage Society

The group interested in recording the history of Bilsthorpe and its colliery and holds a collection of over 500 photographs, and some audio-visual material (e.g. a short 20 minute film of an underground fire at the colliery in 1957). Contact Robert Bradley for more information.

bfi National Film And Television Archive

The bfi archive holds films made by the National Coal Board Film Unit (1952-84).

Artistic

In 1994, British Coal sponsored Majorie Arnfield’s exhibition A Tribute to Coal Mining in Nottinghamshire at Nottingham University's Djanogly Art Gallery. She then held a further 20 exhibitions of her mining art under the title “Images of Coal” at museums and art galleries across the UK.
